Mark Lause Mon, 8 Nov 1999 10:26:57 Historian seeking information on the WATTLES family which settled in Linn County ca. 1856. The heads of the households were Augustus WATTLES and John O. WATTLES, prominent abolitionists and Fourierists who came to Kansas in 1854 from Utopia, Ohio--a community just upriver from Cincinnati that had been lost in the flooding after 1849. In Kansas, they were associated with John Brown and the foundations of the Republican party. Along with Susan WATTLES, they launched the first woman suffrage society in the territory. Stephen H. WATTLES, brevet brigadier general in the Civil War was the son of either Augustus or John. Any information would be of interest. Thank you. |
