Ron Gear Fri, 17 Apr 1998 20:54:00
I would like information about the GEAR families of Linn County, Kansas. My great grandfather Milton GEAR lived there from 1880 to 1905. His parents were Luther GEAR and Lavina FREEMAN from Butler, County, Ohio. Milton married Ada MASON in 1879 and they had 10 children. In 1905 they moved to Canada. The 1900 census shows 4 other GEAR families at Parker, Kansas. Prior to 1900, Sylvanus GEAR, a cousin of Milton returned to Butler County, Ohio with his family. I would like any information about these GEAR families.

I'm researching Linn County families Richard CROZIER, Henry Bascom SCOTT, John Samuel SOMMERS and James R. WORKMAN. All were residents of Linn County from about 1858 until about 1920. I would be pathetically grateful for any information on any of these families. Also, anyone who knows of reunions of the FIFTH KANSAS CAVALRY REGIMENT or GAR meetings following the Civil War is kindly requested to contact me. Many thanks! CROSSON, William was known to have been in Linn County, KS in 1898 and possibly died there although he is buried at Burdett, Pawnee County, KS. His son Michael CROSSON had drowned in the LaCygne River in April of 1898, leaving a wife Molly CROSSON nee MYERS and three small children. William CROSSON must have gone to Linn County in the company of his small son Charles CROSSON and his daughter Louisa SARVER and her husband John. Am trying to locate death record for William CROSSON. I have much descendant information to share.

NICKEL/NICHOL(S) Samuel; Linn Co., between 1855 &1870s. I am seeking any information about Samuel NICKEL who first appears on the 1855 Territorial Census, 5th District (Linn Co.). He barely escaped the Marais des Cygnes massacre. His wife, Ellen, and children escaped unharmed when marauders burned down their home. Children's names: William, Samuel, John, Benjamin, Jasper and Newton (twins) Robert, George, Francis, Andrew, Sarah &Mary. I found the family on the 1860 & 1870 censuses and then they disappeared. What happened to the family? Are any buried in Linn Co.? Couldn't find them on the microfiche of Linn County cemeteries at the Family History Center. Did they move back to Missouri?

I am looking for information about my great grandfather Wm MALLON, b. 14 July 1849; m. Sabina HARPER 19 Sep 1867; At least 1st 4 of 10 children were born in Linn Co. KS Moved to Holt County, MO in 1890s; Died somewhere in Texas; date unknown. Gr gr grandfather Thomas MALLON appears in 1870 census record for Linn Co, KS Potosi Twp 2, page 117. It is believed he was in some trouble with the law in Texas sometime after 1880 or 1890. Thomas MALLON b. and d. and marriage are unknown. It is also believed Thomas MALLON came to this country because of trouble with the law in Ireland. This probably explains why he is so difficult to trace.

These people are not listed in 1860 Census index. 1865 Kansas State Census for Potosi Twp shows first 5 children born in Missouri, 6th child John F born in Kansas, probably Linn Co. Vern Paul was kind enough to lookup the 1865 data for me. 1870 Census shows this family still in Linn Co, KS, Potosi Twp No 2. By this time 1st child Wm S MALLON, my gr grandfather had m Sabina HARPER on 19 Sep 1867. I know their 1st few children were born in Linn Co, KS and the family moved to Holt County, MO sometime after 1890. Thomas MALLON left Ireland in connection with some trouble with the law in abt 1840s. He lived in Bates Co, MO then Linn Co,KS. Her served in Company C, 16th Regiment, Kansas (military data provided by Vern Paul lookup) After 1870 census I am unable to find Thomas and Elizabeth MALLON. Current family members say after he left Linn Co,KS he was in trouble with the law again--this time in Texas. Can anyone help?
